The Ghosts of Lightweights Past

December 21, 2006

By Suzanne Nield

‘Tis the season to be nostalgic, and like everyone I get that way where Lord Lonsdale’s belt is involved. As the year drew to an end, Carl Froch got to take his home, and Andy Morris was shamefully robbed of the chance to do the same. (We all know that, had he been allowed to continue, Andy would have won. He needed only one more defence after that to hand the belt down to his grandkids. No-one except the lucky Simpson is feeling much in the way of Xmas spirit towards referee John Keane.) Read the rest of this entry »

Team Gammer Sticks To Guns Over Audley Harrison Rejection

December 21, 2006

British Heavyweight Champion Scott Gammer’s promoter/manager Paul Boyce confirms that he has rejected the overtures of Audley Harrison’s new promoter Sports Network and turned down an offer to meet “A-Force” at London’s Wembley Stadium in February.

“There been a lot of talk about Scott possibly fighting Audley Harrison,” said Boyce. “But it’s probably not going to happen. We’ve offered the fight to Audley twice in the past and he turned us down both times. Now, he’s got nothing to offer us back. Read the rest of this entry »

Woolcombe On Track For British Title

December 21, 2006

Unbeaten light middleweight Gary “Hot Stuff” Woolcombe draws closer to British title challenge.

Woolcombe will appear on the Martin Power vs. Tshifhiwa Munyai Commonwealth Bantamweight Championship rematch at Goresbrook LC in Dagenham, England on 26 January (now in an English title challenge against Andrew Facey the British Boxing Board confirmed yesterday – Ed). As part of an elimination tournament to determine the next challenger for the British title, Woolcombe was to face Michael Jones until the lanky based Liverpool boxer’s number came up in the form of a challenge to European Champion Michele Piccirillo in Milan next month.

“I was really looking forward to fighting Michael Jones,” said Woolcombe. “He’s a very good fighter and I’ll have to face him down the line anyway, so I wanted to get it out of the way now. I think it would’ve been a good fight and one that the fans really wanted to see.” Read the rest of this entry »

Eastman/Williams Undercard … Lynes Back On Winning Trail!!!

December 16, 2006

By Dean Moston

Hornchurch Light Welterweight Colin Lynes got back to winning ways with a last round stoppage of Hungary’s Janos Petrovics. Lynes was on top throughout. The smaller, older Petrovics looked content to survive, but couldn’t get out of the way of a cracking left hook in the sixth round which put him down and nearly out. The referee looked carefully at Petrovics before allowing it to continue. Lynes then unleashed a barrage of shots to drive his man back to the ropes before the referee wisely called it off. The time was 1’36 of the final round. Read the rest of this entry »

Eastman … Reclaims British Title

December 16, 2006

By Dean Moston

Howard Eastman reclaimed the British Middleweight Title with a punishing 12th round knockout of Richard Williams at Bethnal Green’s York Hall.

Williams, a mile behind on the cards, ran on to a big right hand and was counted out flat on his back at 2’02 of the final round to put the kibosh on what had been a frustrating night for him. Read the rest of this entry »

The 60-second British Boxing news round-up

December 15, 2006

By Ben Carey

All the British news snippets you may have missed, which can be digested in under a minute (or there abouts).

Amir Khan and Audley Harrison will return to the ring at the Wembley Arena on February 17 against TBA. Harrison reportedly has set his sights on challenging British champion Scott Gammer. However the Welshman, whose mandatory challenger is still Danny Williams despite the Brixton man’s pasting by Harrison at the weekend, may instead elect to make a voluntary defence against Michael Sprott instead.

Gammer was in fact approached about stepping in to face Harrison on the recent ExCel Arena bill when Commonwealth king Matt Skelton withdrew in what would have been a career best day. But the undefeated Gammer, some way short of peak fitness, declined the opportunity.

Promoter Frank Warren has said that the Feb 17 Wembley show will contain “a world title fight”. Details will be released next week. Read the rest of this entry »

Witter, Daws & O’Donnell on marquee bill at Ally Pally

December 15, 2006

Hennessy Sports are promoting a championship-laden bill headlined by Junior Witter at the Alexandra Palace in London that will provide the UK leg of the Sky Box Office Pay Per View Event on January 20th featuring Ricky Hatton.

On the show Witter – Hatton’s long-term rival – will make the first defence of the WBC light welterweight title he won by comprehensively out-pointing former world champion DeMarcus Corley at the same venue in September.

The Bradford man will face tough Mexican Arturo Morua, who holds a win over former WBA champion Carlos Maussa.

“He looks like a handful,” appraised Witter, the first ever Brit to hold the 140lb WBC green belt, the most prestigious in the sport. “Like most Mexicans he comes forward, is very aggressive and will look to win. He has fast hands and a very high work-rate. Read the rest of this entry »

Trainer Graham speaks exclusively on Hatton’s Urango title challenge

December 15, 2006

By Martin Williams

RICKY Hatton takes on IBF light-welter boss Juan Urango on January 20 in Las Vegas. Trainer Billy Graham, who has guided ‘The Hitman’ through 41 fights undefeated, believes his charge has what it takes to be a legend.

The duo, who’ve been together since 28 year-old Hatton turned professional in 1997, know Urango is tough but are confident he’ll lose, just like the rest, leaving the door open for a battle with controversial Mexican legend Jose Luis Castillo in the Spring, provided Castillo gets past Herman Ngoudjo on the Paris Hotel undercard.

But Billy never looks to the next fight and demands his boxers do the same. He realises Ricky needs to stay focused if he’s to beat the undefeated Colombian, but knows he will.

“Training is going fantastic, he’s got down to fighting weight and if anything is ahead of where he should be,” says Billy. “We started work with the body belt on Monday and he’s looking sharp, I’m well pleased.” Read the rest of this entry »

Eastman set to impress against Williams

December 14, 2006

Howard Eastman has vowed to put his recent setbacks behind him and begin the process of rebuilding towards another world title shot when he takes on long-term friend Richard Williams for the vacant British middleweight title this Friday at the York Hall in Bethnal Green live on Sky Sports.

The ‘Battersea Bomber’ is coming off the back of three losses, but the figures only tell half the story. The run has come at the very highest level and in controversial circumstances, supporting the 36-year-old’s conviction that he still has the ability to capture a major honour. Hughes lands Corcoran rematch

December 14, 2006

By Ben Carey

Sean “Short Fuse” Hughes, controversially stopped by Billy Corcoran on the undercard of Carl Froch vs Tony Dodson last month, has secured a rematch, scheduled for the Nottingham Arena sometime in March.

Referee Lee Cook’s premature stoppage of the Yorkshireman in the eighth and final round was met with widespread disapproval within the trade. Hughes, who was infront at the time of the stoppage, had floored Corcoran early and had the Irishman in dire straits in the seventh, but despite connecting with several unanswered blows referee Cook allowed the action to continue. In a thrilling encounter, Hughes himself survived a trip to the canvas.

The fight, which took place in the super-bantamweight division, was Corcoran’s first since his unsuccessful bid to capture the British title up at super-featherweight which saw him stopped in four rounds by Carl Johanneson. Billy, who was shaken repeatedly by the light-hitting Hughes, seemed ill-at-ease after losing so much weight.

Crucially, this rematch will take place at featherweight with the vacant English title on the line -an early psychological advantage for Corcoran, one would assume. Click below for the rest of the English title news. Read the rest of this entry »

Unbeaten Trinidadian next for Audley

December 14, 2006

By Ben Carey

Audley Harrison could be back in action as early as February against one of his former sparring partners. Trinidad’s Kertson Manswell, who sparred Harrison in 2004 in Las Vegas, believes he is next in line to face the rejuvenated A-FORCE following his spectacular three-round slaying of Danny Williams at the weekend.

Speaking to the Trinidad Express on the eve of Harrison’s rematch with Williams last week, Manswell said:

“It’s an eliminator for the Commonwealth title. It really doesn’t matter which one (ie Harrison or Williams) wins. The winner fights me in February so basically I am going there to introduce myself to the English press so that they know who is coming next.” Read the rest of this entry »

Eastman and Williams attempt to climb the ladder once again

December 14, 2006

By Sam Doleman

Former amateur adversaries Howard ‘the Battersea Bomber’ Eastman 40-4 (34), and Richard ‘The Secret’ Williams 21-3-1 (17), will be facing off for more than the British Middleweight Championship, when they meet at the York Hall, live on Sky Sports, this Friday evening.

The bout will surely prove to be a make or break match-up for both fighters. Eastman, now 36, is on the rebound following not only three successive defeats, but three successive lethargic performances. Williams, 35, has been plodding along since a crushing defeat to Sergio Martinez (his second to the Argentinean slickster) in April 2004. In the subsequent 30 months, Williams has collected three wins, but each victory has a hollow feeling when the standard of opponent is taken into consideration.

A mere 22 months ago, some British fans believed Eastman was ready to finally conquer the world. A title shot loomed against the reigning undisputed champion, the greatest Middleweight of my era, and a man who can lay claim to holding his own in any era, Bernard Hopkins. The bout was to be held in the Staples centre, Los Angeles, and at the eleventh hour Irish sports channel Setanta struck a deal, a deal which would provide the British public with Howard’s crowning moment, or so some thought. The Battersea Bomber has something to prove and will be looking to get his career back on track after three successive high-profile defeats, against legendary American Bernard Hopkins, unbeaten German Arthur Abraham and highly-rated Colombian Edison Miranda. Read the rest of this entry »

Fired-up Harrison destroys Williams

December 10, 2006

By Oliver Fennell

The cowardly lion bites back

The surest way to get a man to do something you don’t expect him to is to question his courage.

Back in school, we’ll all have memories of somebody rising to an unlikely challenge because they were taunted with: “What’s the matter? Are you chicken?”

Sometimes this would result in a boy maniacally running across a road as a speeding car approached. Or it might be his spur to ask out the prettiest girl in the class. And other times it would unleash a previously-unseen fighter, who has grown sick of the taunts and responded with his fists to the open-mouthed astonishment of those who goaded him.

The latter was the case with Audley Harrison, who had stoically endured a career’s worth of playground taunts, beginning with the repetitive “Ordinary Harrison” jibes and building to the tumult of boos, obscene hand gestures and foul invective that filled London’s ExCeL Centre on Saturday night.

Facing conqueror Danny Williams in a hastily-arranged rematch, Harrison was surrounded by thousands of spectators who were intoxicated by the pack mentality and were baying for his destruction. Read the rest of this entry »

Thaxton Sheds Tears Of Joy!!

Williams & Harrison in weigh-in brawl

December 8, 2006

Emotions ran high during this afternoon’s weigh-in ahead of Danny Williams’ and Audley Harrison’s heavyweight rematch tomorrow night. An apparent push by Williams as the pair prepared to go head-to-head for photographers provoked a furious reaction from Harrison and both men nearly came to blows infront of shocked onlookers.

Despite incurring the rath of upset Board secretary Simon Block, this unexpected show of aggression potentially bodes well for tomorrow night’s encounter which can’t be any worse than the 12-round bore they produced a year ago.

In another surprise, Williams tipped the scales at a relatively trim (well, for him) 19st 1lbs (267lbs), five pounds lighter than when he snapped Harrison’s unbeaten record and a staggering 21lbs less than in his last fight, a points loss to Matt Skelton. Williams, who as ever talked a good game this week, may actually mean business.

There were no surprises from Harrison who weighed 17st 13 1/2. (251.5 lbs)

Khan, Morris & Alexander in title action

December 8, 2006

By Ben Carey

Amir Khan will look to round off a productive year in style by capturing his first professional championship on tomorrow night’s ExCel undercard. The Bolton wonderkid, who turned 20 today, battles Frenchman Rachid Drilzine, originally scheduled for eight, but now over ten rounds for the vacant IBF inter-continental light-welterweight strap.

I thought inter-continental belts were contested over 12? I’m sure Kevin Mitchell fought over 12 rounds when he fought for his minor IBF title. Whatever. Khan needs the rounds and he should get them here. Read the rest of this entry »

Contrasting tests for Hennessy Sports prospects

Harrison out. Career over?

December 7, 2006

Serious doubts must now be cast about the future of Scott Harrison, both in and out of the ring, following his decision to relinquish his WBO featherweight title yesterday, thus aborting Saturday’s domestic dust-up with Dagenham’s Nicky Cook scheduled to take place at London’s ExCel Arena.

Judging by various media reports, Harrison didn’t have a hope in hell of dragging his considerable frame down to the 9st featherweight championship limit. Alarm bells rang yesterday when Harrison failed to turn up for his check weigh-in. With Harrison unable to get under 9st 7lbs, he eventually bowed to medical advice and officially pulled out of a fight that Harrison’s father / trainer Peter alleges was in serious jeopardy at the outset of the week despite a wave of media coverage.

Harrison’s depressing downward spiral will no doubt win him some sympathy following yesterday’s latest incident. But the Scot’s woes have been self inflicted. Spare a thought for Nicky Cook who has trained dilligently in anticipation of his big chance, and the paying public who were prepared to give the wayward Harrison another chance.

Scott Harrison vs Nicky Cook big fight preview

December 6, 2006

By Elliot Worsell

They used to say a boxing ring was ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson’s safest place on earth – his natural home. Ironic, perhaps, given the dangers that are associated with the sport – yet Tyson’s problems and pains only mounted when not geared with gloves, shorts and a gumshield. Home comforts were found inside four turnbuckles and a canvas.

The same can be said of WBO featherweight champion Scott Harrison. Though Harrison’s recent out-of-ring escapades haven’t been as notorious as Tyson’s, ‘The Real McCoy’ has hit the newspaper back pages for all the wrong reasons in passing months.

An alcohol problem in mid-2006 saw scheduled bouts with Joan Guzman and Juan Manuel Marquez flushed, and a break-up from long-time manager Frank Maloney only furthered people’s concerns. Harrison looked on the ropes. Though the annulled bouts against nine stone dangermen Guzman and Marquez may have been blessings in disguise, Harrison’s problems, at 29 years of age, are wholly unwelcome. The Glasgow battler now hasn’t boxed for over a year.

Subsequently, when Harrison finally does enter the ring on Saturday at London’s Excel Arena, he’ll no doubt breathe a sigh of relief. Just as Tyson did before him, Harrison will, for a maximum of 12 rounds, let all of his problems slip out of his mind. All that will worry him is the arsenal and endeavour of his opponent. Danny Williams – Audley Harrison big-fight preview

December 5, 2006

By Ben Carey

Despite stinking the joint out when they last met, there’s still an air of intrigue about Saturday’s heavyweight rematch between Danny Williams and Audley Harrison which takes place once again inside London’s ExCeL Arena – a non-title affair, scheduled for 12 rounds, the chief supporting contest to Scott Harrison’s WBO featherweight duel with Nicky Cook.

The much-maligned Harrison, who was to have challenged Matt Skelton for the Commonwealth crown until a hand injury officially ruled Skelton out on Friday, has instead been offered the opportunity to salvage his ailing career against the man who outpointed him a year ago.

Harrison didn’t just lose his unbeaten record that night. He ruined his reputation, probably for good, in front of thousands in the Arena and the millions watching live on terrestrial television. And, perhaps worse, Harrison sacrificed his self-respect through his unwillingness to engage in battle, seemingly petrified of letting his hands go for fear of taking punches in return. Reid back with a bang: undercard review

December 5, 2006

By Dan McGovern

In the heavyweight division it can sometimes only take one punch. Pele Reid, (16st 8lb 12oz), proved this old adage with his sixth round felling of Sheffield’s Paul King. The anticipated return of Reid formed the main support on the Elcock-Bendall show and the Birmingham native’s name can now once again be mentioned when weighing up the domestic scene’s best big men.

The fight’s finish was as spectacular as it was sudden, with Reid dropping the visitor flat on his back with a single right cross. King gamely hauled himself upright in time to continue, but referee Terry O’Connor rightly waved the fight off after only 23 seconds of the sixth and final round. Whilst Reid’s highlight reel ending meant his fans left happy and satisfied, the five rounds which preceded it were far from scintillating. Read the rest of this entry »

Calzaghe claims another title

December 4, 2006

By Sam Doleman

Joe Calzaghe has been confirmed as Welsh Sports personality of the year 2006. Calzaghe was chosen by public vote ahead of Nicole Cooke (Cycling), Ryan Giggs (Football), Bradley Dredge (Golf), David Davies (Swimming) and Michaela Breeze (Weightlifter).

The undefeated Welshman cemented his place in boxing history books with a clinical demolition of American Jeff Lacy at the Manchester Evening News Arena back in March. The win saw Calzaghe pick up the IBF title, a strap he has subsequently relented to pursue his American dream. Calzaghe’s 42nd victory saw the Welshman outpoint tough Cameroonian Sakio Bika in October. These two victories alone proved enough to see the Welshman take the Welsh version of the national Sports personality accolade, a title Calzaghe is also in the running for. Tribute to an Elusive Legend

December 4, 2006

By Suzanne Nield

He may have boxed exclusively in the United States and Canada, but Willie Pep’s recent death has been mourned by boxing fans on both sides of the Atlantic. Here Suzanne Nield takes a detailed look at Pep’s extraordinary career, and pays tribute to the featherweight legend.

Gugliermo Papaleo – better known as Willie Pep – was born in Middletown, Connecticut on September 19, 1922. His mother is credited with setting him on his career path, sending him to the gym as a boy to learn how to defend himself. Showing remarkable early talent, Pep won two Connecticut state titles, flyweight in ‘38 and bantam in ‘39. With an amateur career of 62 wins out of 65, one of Willie’s few losses came against a young Sugar Ray Robinson. At 18 he turned pro, having dropped out of high school two years earlier to devote himself to his sport. Read the rest of this entry »

Williams interested in Harrison rematch

December 1, 2006

By Ben Carey

Keeping up with the British heavyweight scene can be difficult at the best of times.

After news broke on Matt Skelton’s official web site that he has had to pull out of next Saturday’s Commonwealth title showdown with Audley Harrison due to a hand injury, Secondsout.com have reported that Danny Williams is on standby to replace Skelton. However, according to the article, Harrison is believed to be stalling on a rematch with Williams, who embarrassed him on points exactly a year ago, instead preferring to take on Skelton.

To complicate matters further, UKBoxingPress understands that Williams has signed a contract to challenge British champion Scott Gammer in Port Talbot on February 16. Mandatory challenger Williams was originally booked to meet Gammer in the Welshman’s first defence in October only to withdraw due to his religious beliefs (Muslim Williams refuses to train during Ramadan).

Any suggestion that Gammer might be persuaded to take on Williams on Saturday week seem unlikely with the British champion understood to be short of match fitness.

Skelton out of Harrison clash

December 1, 2006

A statement on Matt Skelton’s official website has confirmed that the Commonwealth champion is out of next Saturday’s heavyweight clash with Audley Harrison after he sustained a hand injury in sparring. Full statement below:

Matt Skelton regrettably has had to pull out of his scheduled contest with Audley Harrison on 9th Dec. Due to a hand injury sustained in sparring and which subsequently was made worse by continuation of training and after receiving X-Ray results Matt, under medical advise, has been advised not to proceed with the bout as undoubtedly this would effect his performance and cause further damage to his hand. Matt is obviously devastated about having to pull out and would like to apologise to his fight fans, his promoter and Audley Harrison for this decision. The injured hand will now be dealt with and a full recovery is scheduled for the early part of the New Year.

“Urango has a big punch, he’s very muscular and very strong,” said Hatton. “In his last fight he had to go looking for his opponent, but I don’t think that’s going to a problem when we get in the ring.
