Keeton-Hobson rematch heading to Docklands

By Ben Carey

John “Buster” Keeton’s first defence of his British cruiserweight title against former champion Mark Hobson appears to be heading to the ExCeL Arena in London’s Docklands on May 26. This rematch of their June 2006 classic (which Hobson won in the fourth) will be on the undercard to another rematch which will form the top of the bill when heayweights Matt Skelton and Michael Sprott collide.

The bill is also set to feature the British welterweight title eliminator between Colin McNeil and Ross Minter and the pro debut of the highly touted Jamie Cox. Promoter Frank Warren will be announcing more contests in due course.

Hobson, bidding to bounce back after being shocked in 70 seconds by Enzo Maccarinelli, will step up his preparations by setting up a training camp in Cyprus with stablemate Dale Robinson accompanied by others next week. For now though Keeton will be more concerned with his vacant Commonwealth title clash with Troy Ross which takes place in Canada on Monday night. Southpaw stylist Ross, a talented amateur, is a hot-favourite to triumph over the Sheffield slugger who finally captured the British title at the fourth attempt by stopping Lee Swaby in October.

Both Keeton and Ross are a little on the small size for the modern-day 200lbs cruiserweight division but providing he doesn’t get drawn into a shoot-out Ross should prevail by the halfway mark. British fans were given a taster of the Canadian’s silky skills when he impressed in brushing aside Hastings Rasani at the Alexandra Palace on the undercard of Junior Witter’s first defence of his WBC light-welterweight crown in January

  1. Keeton has just been kayo-ed in round 2 of his attempt at the vacant Commonwealth cruiserweight title by Canadian Troy Ross , last seen here at the Ally Pally on the Witter undercard.
    Ross looks interesting.
